New Kiwi in town looking for accommodation

Hi there Victoria Kiwis,

A fellow Kiwi is making the move to Victoria and would like to know if anyone can help her out with finding a place to stay.

"I am heading over to Victoria in May and am looking for a place to stay. Would love to meet fellow Kiwis. I fly into Vancouver on the 19th and head over to Victoria on the 26th and need to find accommodation. I am thinking of just staying in a motel till I find something. An apartment or spare room with fellow kiwis would be ideal. If I could find it before I get there it would be a great relief! Im 30 years old, female and my hometown is Kaitaia north of Whangarei. Im hoping to stay in Canada indefinately as my grandmother lives in Victoria. If you could help me in any way it would be appreciated. My name is Rose and i cant wait to get there!"

Humble Eskimo lolly gives tourist a bad taste

"It's as much a staple of New Zealand sweet confectionary as pineapple lumps and spearmint leaves, but the marshmallow Eskimo has been deemed offensive to native Canadians and may require a makeover."

Victoria Kiwis ANZAC Day BBQ

It has been proposed that we come out of hibernation and have a Kiwi get-together now that spring has sprung in sunny Victoria.
ANZAC Day is coming up on Saturday 25th April and we thought that that would be a good day to get the Kiwi community in Victoria together.
We have been contacted by a number of new arrivals on the Island who are keen to say Kia Ora/G'day to some local Kiwis.
So we're organizing a low key event that we hope you can attend.

It's a BBQ (or 'wiener roast' as they say in Canada) at the Goldstream Provincial Park Picnic Shelter. (location) (map)
It will be a very informal affair. B.Y.O. pretty much everything you'll need to eat, drink and sit on.
The Province of British Columbia will be providing the fire pits, picnic tables and the beautiful surroundings (by way of it being a public park). We'll be providing the New Zealanders. You bring something to roast over the fire, something to drink, camp-chairs, your good self, the kids, grandma and grandpa, the dog, and maybe some firewood if you've got it handy. Don't fret if you don't have any of this stuff. Someone will no doubt share their fire pit, give you a hotdog and lend you a grandpa.

DIY Kiwi Meat Pies

If your are anything like me you may have experienced the occasional craving for a good old Kiwi meat pie. The New Zealand equivalent of the obsequious north American hot-dog; they are surprisingly hard to come by in Canada. Well I don't have the address of a good local bakery with a meat pie cabinet but I may have found the next best thing...

Rachael Ray - the American cook with the grating New Jersey accent - has a rather excellent cookbook Rachael Ray 365 No Repeats. And Tucked away in it's pages is a recipe for 'Aussie Meat Pies'. Yes I know, Australians eh, always stealing our stuff.
Anyway, it's the closest thing I've found to a meat pie as we know it and makes for a darn good feed with lashings of tomato sauce (anyone got any Watties?).

So if you're a dab hand in the kitchen - or you can talk your better half into it - I suggest giving it a whirl. Your taste buds will thank you for it and you might just make it through another year without toffee-pops, filled rolls, fresh-cream donuts, fejoas, sally-luns, fruju iceblocks, L&P...

Nats and expats guide Velox to top

Victoria News article on our local Kiwi Rugby players:

"Likewise, a group of imported Kiwi’s have done their part in driving Velox to the top of the league. Brothers Aaron (fly half) and Ryan Frisby (fullback), Clay Panga (inside centre/flanker) and Dan White (inside centre) join coach Stewart as New Zealanders who’ve brought their brand of rugby to Gordon Head."

Calling all Tall Poppies

The Victoria Kiwis website has a fresh new look and some handy new features like email subscription and RSS feeds.
But our website is only as good as the people behind it, and that my fellow Kiwis is you!
We are looking for any and all contributions from our New Zealand community here on Vancouver Island. If you have local news or news from NZ, stories, sports updates, ideas or anything else related to New Zealanders in Canada please contact us. We hope to make this website a lively and informative place for new arrivals and long time residents alike.
